INTERVIEW: DJ legend launches 'Radio Morecambe' afternoons of music and memories

Steve Middlesbrough is bringing 'Radio Morecambe' to The Platform

A legendary DJ is launching a new regular afternoon of live music and memories called 'Radio Morecambe'.

Steve Middlesbrough will celebrate a near-55 year career as a local DJ by hosting weekly sessions at The Platform playing music through the decades.

Steve began as a DJ in 1971 and has played at more than 8,500 gigs since then at pubs, functions, festivals and venues across the Lancaster and Morecambe District.

He said that 'Radio Morecambe' will bring all the fun of a live radio show - with popular songs from the 1950s to the 1990s for people to dance to, with live acts and interviews with special guests.

"It's not really a radio station, we haven't got an aerial! But it is going to be music from the 1950s through to the 1990s, a different decade every time," said Steve.

"I call it the wonder years. People love to live in their wonder years, which are between (the age of) roughly 15, when they discover love, and 25 when they discover responsibility! They discover music as well, and they always want to go back to their wonder years. We will take them there!

"We want to bring in acts as soon as possible, tributes to Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Marvin Gaye, Cilla Black and Buddy Holly, are just a few names. Those names evoke such marvellous memories."

Steve also ran the highly popular Summerbreeze festivals on the Promenade in the late 1990s, starring big names including Tony Hadley, Leo Sayer and Courtney Pine.

In 2023, he released his first book 'Sentosa Island Survivors' Club' about how he and his friend Barry Lucas pulled off a major Christmas dance party on a Singapore beach in the middle of a typhoon.

Steve is known for his expertise in putting on music nights across multiple genres, including pop, soul, jazz, disco and country.

'Radio Morecambe' begins at The Platform on Marine Road, Morecambe, on Tuesday March 4, running from 2pm to around 5pm. All welcome.

There will be a charity raffle at every event during March, in aid of North West Air Ambulance.

Admission is £8 including a free hot drink, or you can buy an Orange Radio Morecambe Card which allows you admission for £5 every Tuesday during March. Tickets available on the door.
