Rising Lancaster country singer to release debut EP

The debut EP of a rising country singer/songwriter from Lancaster is being released next month.

Susannah Clegg’s ‘The Road is Only Miles’ features five original tracks and a cover of the Merle Travis country classic ‘Sixteen Tons’, and is available to stream and download on February 1.

In support of the EP release, Susannah will be performing at The Quarterhouse, Lancaster on Sunday February 2.

Susannah said: ‘’Country and Americana music has a unique storytelling aspect to it.

“It can capture some of the rawest human emotions like nostalgia, sorrow and loss, and root them in experiences and stories that are as relatable today as they were a hundred years ago.

This timeless narrative tradition runs throughout the EP. “Walked This Road”, the track from which the title “The Road Is Only Miles” is taken, captures the sense of uncertainty of being on the road and the yearning from home that this instills, while “Tess” takes inspiration from the writings of nineteenth century English novelist Thomas Hardy, reimagining his seminal work Tess of the D’Urbervilles through the lens of country music.

The Lancaster-based musician has become a regular and popular performer on the northwest country and Americana circuit. Known for her soaring vocals and skilful arrangements of American roots standards, she is now making a name for herself for original music that rings with the unmistakeable sound of the old West.

The debut single from the EP, Colorado, was selected and played by BBC Introducing on the day of its release, and also features regularly on Beyond Radio’s playlist.

Her recent work as a solo artist is a powerful combination of impressive vocals, thoughtful lyricism and acoustic guitar, taking inspiration from the likes of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Loretta Lynn, and Townes van Zandt as well as contemporary artists such as Willie Watson, Sierra Ferrell and Gillian Welch to produce a timeless sound that takes in country, blues, soul, folk and western swing.

Susannah is also a key member of bluegrass and country string-band The Long Nights, who released their debut album in 2024.
