Council cancels Roy 'Chubby' Brown Morecambe gig after complaints

Roy 'Chubby' Brown

A scheduled Morecambe gig by controversial comic Roy 'Chubby' Brown has been cancelled after complaints.

The stand-up comedian, who divides opinion with his brand of humour, was due to perform at The Platform in Morecambe on August 19.

But venue owners Lancaster City Council have today cancelled the show.

Mark Davies, chief executive of Lancaster City Council, said: “Following concerns raised by our community, Lancaster City Council has taken the decision to cancel the appearance of Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown at the Platform in Morecambe this August.

“We understand that this decision will disappoint some people, but we are proud to be a fair, diverse and inclusive organisation and do not believe that Mr Brown’s shows are compatible with these values.

“All ticket holders will be contacted and offered a full refund.”

Prior to the cancellation, an online petition had been set up calling for the council to call off the show.

The petition at Change.org, set up by 'RCB Out', said Mr Brown's comedy is "wholly unacceptable" and that "supporting this gig flies in the face of the City Council's Equality and Diversity Policy".

At time of writing, 59 people had signed the petition.

A post on Roy 'Chubby' Brown's Facebook page yesterday (Monday), said: "I wish I could start the week off with good news! But unfortunately they are at it again.

"I wish these people would put their energy into something worthwhile.. instead of trying to get a show banned which just makes people laugh and happy etc etc."

Mr Brown's tour manager Ritchie Hoyle released a statement on the Facebook page following the cancellation.

"We had a call from The Platform in Morecambe this morning informing us that (Lancaster City) Council in their wisdom have listened to 59 people who signed a so called petition against Chubby performing in August at The Platform!!

"And yet again IGNORING the thousands who support Chubby’s right to perform! And THEY have decided on YOUR behalf that the Chubby show in Morecambe in August can no longer go ahead and has to be cancelled, does this sound familiar?????

"All I can do is apologise but it’s out of our hands, I repeat this is not the venue's decision who were happy to book Chubby, but a COUNCIL decision!

"So if you need explanations as to why they have taken this ridiculous action! PLEASE DIRECT YOUR QUESTIONS TO (Lancaster City) COUNCIL, only they have the answers apparently, we didn’t get an explanation just a cancellation call.

"Cancellation/Snowflake/Woke culture wins again I’m afraid!!!

"The world's gone mad."

Earlier this year, Pendle Council cancelled a Roy 'Chubby' Brown show due to take place at The Muni Theatre in Colne, saying it was in the “best interest of the community”.
