A Heysham primary school will open a new nursery in September after receiving more than £140,000 in government funding.
Mossgate Primary School on Kingsway will revamp an existing classroom to offer 26 new nursery places, after their School-Based Nursery Capital Grant application for £142,015.37 was approved.
Mossgate was chosen as part of a government scheme to create an average of 20 additional child places per school.
Three hundred schools across the UK were granted money to repurpose spare space within their buildings to create or expand nursery provision.
Mossgate's new school-based nursery will include an existing classroom and outdoor learning area, with 15-hour and 30-hour free childcare accepted, and wraparound childcare available.
"We are delighted that the government has approved our School-Based Nursery Capital Grant application so that we can open to three and four year olds from September 2025," said Rob Smith, head teacher at Mossgate Primary School.
“The funding will allow us to grow as a school and provide our community with high-quality teacher-led nursery education so that our youngest learners get the best start in life.
"At Mossgate Primary School, we believe that early education is vital for children’s development and school readiness, particularly for those who may need extra support."
Speaking to Beyond Radio on Thursday, Mr Smith said when the Kingsway school saw the funding was available they "jumped at the chance".
He said some internal work would need doing to remodel infant toilets and create an external door, but most of the nursery would be contained within "modified underused existing spaces" as this was a criteria of the application.
The Mossgate reception class and nursery will be led by teacher Bryony Booth.
Nichola Buczynski, chair of governors at Mossgate, said: "The governors at Mossgate Primary School have been clear of the benefits of opening a school-based nursery, including continuity for children and their families and the opportunity to develop expert-led learning which will provide our children with strong foundations for lifelong success.
“I am pleased that our strong application to the government has been approved, and we are excited that so many families have already signed up to join our school-based nursery from September 2025."
Applications are being taken for nursery places. Email nursery@mossgate.lancs.sch.uk or parents can find the QR code to fill in an expression of interest form at www.mossgate.lancs.sch.uk, and the school Facebook page.
Storth CE Primary School near Arnside, was also one of the schools chosen to benefit from the scheme, in the Morecambe and Lunesdale constituency.
Lizzi Collinge, MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale, said: “This is excellent news for two local schools and for families nearby, who will benefit from this expanded nursery provision from September.

“I know from speaking to families across my constituency there is a real need for high-quality early years education that doesn’t break the bank.
“These measures will help local families, enabling to parents get to work, increasing access to childcare when they need it, and supporting the government’s promise to put more cash in their pockets.
“This is the first step to delivering the 3,000 school-based nurseries which this Labour Government has promised, giving parents choice, and helping every child get the best start in life.”
Grosvenor Park Primary School in Morecambe, in the Lancaster & Wyre constituency, was also granted funding.
Alongside Mossgate, Grosvenor Park was one of only two schools in Lancashire to be successful.
Beyond Radio has contacted Grosvenor Park for comment.
In total, 642 schools applied for funding from the school-based nursery capital grant. Five of these voluntarily withdrew and the remaining 637 applications were spread across 135 local authorities. In total, the 637 applicants bid for £75.8m.
A pan-disability football game will take place at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium to help raise awareness of autism, and the support available to those who may need it.
