A series of events and workshops will be held in the Lancaster area for people to gather over good food.
North Lancashire’s FoodFutures partnership is calling for people across the Lancaster and Morecambe District to ‘Spring Into Action’ around creating a thriving local food system that is healthy, resilient and fair.
'Spring into Action' includes events at the Storey Centre in Lancaster, St Thomas's Church in Lancaster, Morecambe Library, Freeman's Wood in Lancaster, the Ridge Community Centre and other venues.
It runs from Saturday April 26 to Friday May 2.
“Spring Into Action is a chance to gather over good food and share skills, ideas and connections," said Anna Clayton, FoodFutures co-ordinator.
"It brings the 'Our Food Futures' strategy alive and starts to build momentum and energy for the growing season ahead and the many joys, harvests and challenges this may bring."
The Spring Into Action week will kick off with an ‘Intro to good facilitation and sociocracy’ with Jay Godden from Eggcup and Anna Clayton from LESS.
April 26 and 27 will be packed with a diversity of different sessions: from practical hands-on workshops, through to craft activities and knowledge sharing.
You could choose to join some of the FoodFutures network in Morecambe Library, or take part in the ‘Bury your Pants’ initiative as part of Fashion Revolution week activities; visit the Plot market garden for a tour and work session, or join local artist Sarah Hymas and Friends of Freeman’s Wood trustee Shawn Duckers to help map the real history of the Marsh and Freeman’s Wood in Lancaster.
Then there’s a Farm on the Fell tour, a ‘working with community groups’ training session at Claver Hill community food project; and a foraging and sprouting workshop in Halton.
The Sunday evening also offers something unusual: a lamentation circle. This session is for those who feel drawn to share their sorrows; and to draw deeply on the well of wisdom of our ancestors.
The following week includes a range of delicious activities, from a beans and pulses Ukrainian Feast, a Share The Harvest open information session, a cooking on a budget workshop at Carnforth food hub, and a rhubarb themed ‘Taste of Home’ cooking workshop.
FoodFutures is also organising a Spring Into Action special open partnership meeting online where the North Lancs is Golden campaign will be introduced alongside the usual working group updates.
For those interested in stretching their minds, the unnamed bookclub will meet on Tuesday evening to discuss a podcast, the Food Justice Partnership are hosting a panel on the food ladders approach, and the week will end with a Re-commoning community think tank workshop and shared meal.
FoodFutures is North Lancashire’s award winning Sustainable Food Place initiative. It is made up of representatives from the local farming community, local food businesses, the public sector, Lancaster City Council, NGOs, community food groups and our local academic institutions.
Their work is guided by a community food strategy - Our Food Futures.
