Part of the Royal Lancaster Infirmary has been damaged after a vehicle crashed into part of the building earlier today.

There’s an ongoing incident at the RLI following a road traffic collision on Ashton Road.

The collision caused some damage to the hospital building near the Intensive Therapy Unit and Ward 37.

In a statement, the University Hospitals Morecambe Bay Trust said a structural engineer has assessed the damage and confirmed that the building is structurally safe and there is no need to evacuate any colleagues or patients.

There will be a temporary fix to the cosmetic damage put in place whilst a more permanent repair is arranged.

No members of staff or patients were injured in the incident; and all services, including the Emergency Department, remain open as normal.

Emergency services are still on scene so residents and motorists are being advised to stay away from the area if possible.

Scott McLean, Chief Operating Officer at the Trust, added: ‘’I'd like to thank all colleagues and the emergency services for the swift and comprehensive response to this incident - your efforts are very much appreciated.

‘’We send our best to those involved in the crash.’’
