PHOTOS: Original Eric Morecambe sculpture goes on display to mark 25 years since statue was unveiled

The original Eric Morecambe Statue sculpture is now on display in Lancaster

The original sculpture of the Eric Morecambe Statue has gone on display in Lancaster to mark 25 years since the landmark was unveiled.

The sculpture of the Morecambe-born comedian is now available to view at Lancaster City Museum in an exhibition of the work of Graham Ibbeson, the renowned sculptor from Yorkshire who created the Eric statue.

The 'Casting Comedy Northern Legends' exhibition will be open until November 3.

The fibreglass and wood original sculpture of the Morecambe and Wise star was cast into bronze and unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II on Morecambe Promenade on July 23 1999.

The statue (below) has become a huge attraction in the town, for locals and visitors alike.

The exhibition also includes 'Eric's boot'.

In 2014, a vandal damaged the statue and it had to be removed for repairs, leaving just Eric's boot behind. This temporarily became a tourist attraction in its own right, until the statue was returned and re-unveiled in December that year.

Also part of the exhibition is a miniature 'maquette' of Eric and his comedy partner Ernie Wise, created in 2015.

In the aftermath of the vandalism to the Eric statue, there was talk of a life-size version being unveiled in a 'Sunshine Garden of Fame' near the Winter Gardens in Morecambe.

A fundraising campaign was launched but plans fell through when Lancaster City Council said there was not enough interest in the project.

Instead, a Morecambe and Wise statue was unveiled at Blackpool Winter Gardens.

This is a fibreglass cast of a sculpture of the comedian Ken Dodd, which was installed at the Grand Theatre in Blackpool in 2022.

This is the original sculpture of comedy legends Laurel and Hardy, which was cast into bronze and unveiled in Ulverston, where Stan Laurel was born, in 2010.

The exhibition also includes Mr Ibbeson's miniature sculptures of comedians Victoria Wood (who once lived in Morecambe) and Norman Wisdom.

Mr Ibbeson is pictured below.

Museum opening times are Friday to Tuesday, 10.30am to 4pm. The exhibition is free to view.
