Residents have their say on Morecambe eyesores as council continues to ponder £2m bid

The former Queens Hotel in Morecambe is one of the buildings under consideration

Morecambe residents can have their say on the town's eyesore buildings as the town council considers a £2m bid to bring one of them back to life.

Morecambe Town Council is holding a public survey into neglected and derelict buildings in the town.

This is because they are looking into applying for £2m of Government funding, aiming to take ownership of a building in Morecambe, potentially restore it and bring it back into use for the community.

A Morecambe Town Council spokesperson said: "Morecambe Town Council wants to know your thoughts on neglected and derelict buildings in Morecambe, the importance you place on historic local buildings, and ideas about the role a restored community building could play in town.

"Our survey takes approximately five minutes to complete and can be found at the following link: https://form.jotform.com/241423299459061

"Why are we doing this? The town council is considering an application to bring up to £2m of Government Levelling Up funding into Morecambe via the Community Ownership Fund, which exists to help communities take ownership of assets at risk of loss and restore them for community use.

"Your answers to our survey will help provide supporting evidence for an application and inform how any eligible project proceeds."

In April, Beyond Radio exclusively revealed that the up-for-sale former Queens Hotel night-spot on Marine Road was one of the buildings under consideration.

The town council has since published this image of buildings in Morecambe, alongside their survey.

The £150m fund allows applicants to take ownership of assets - such as land or buildings - which are at risk of being lost to the community.

It is one of the few pots of central government money available to which parish and town councils can apply directly.

Eligible projects can receive between 80 per cent and 90 per cent of total funding, up to a value of £2m, requiring comparatively little in the way of match-funding from applicants.

Officers from Morecambe Town Council will be conducting an in-person survey outside the former Queens Hotel building on Marine Road between 11am and 4pm on Friday June 7 as they continue to gather evidence for an application to the Community Ownership Fund.
