Son's football team rallies round Carnforth mum and dad who've both battled cancer

Henry, Emily and Sam Clark

A youth football team will take on a fundraising challenge after their goalkeeper's mum and dad were both diagnosed with cancer.

Emily Clark had surgery to remove bowel cancer, then while she was recovering, the family received the devastating news that her husband Henry had inoperable stage 4 cancer.

Now parents from Millhead Dynamos football team - where the Clarks' son Samuel is the goalkeeper - have rallied round to help raise money for a cancer charity which supports families like theirs.

They will take part in the Bay Limestone Round, a 55 mile running challenge covering 13 summits around Morecambe Bay, to raise funds for CancerCare.

The football team will be running the final section into Arnside alongside their parents, and Sam himself will take part during this final leg.

Here is Sam (second left, bottom row) with his team-mates.

A fundraising page set up by Lucy Scrase says: "We are raising money for CancerCare because our goalie, Samuel joined Millhead Dynamos in 2023 to help take his mind off all his worries.

"Samuel's mum and dad, Emily and Henry have battled cancer together.

"In 2019 whilst completing a barbering course together, Emily noticed a mole on Henry’s jawline. She urged Henry to get an appointment to have it checked.

"After a mole removal and biopsies, they were broken the news that it was melanoma.

"After another surgery to remove any cancerous tissue it was a time they wished they could put behind them, however between the cancer removal in 2019 until 2022, Henry was experiencing a lot of discomfort in his scar tissue.

"The decision was made to remove the scar and scar tissue in the hope he would heal better.

"During the routine operation in November 2022, they notice a lymph node looks slight pigmented. They decided to take biopsies to be on the safe side and in December 2022 - three days before Christmas, he was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma.

"In January 2023 Henry faced life changing surgery - a full neck dissection and skin flap to remove the cancer following six months of oral chemotherapy.

"2023 was a challenging year for the whole family, so at the start of 2024 it was a fresh start for them all, until Emily became unwell mid-January.

"In a sad twist of irony, the day Henry was climbing Mount Snowdon to raise money for a local cancer charity, Emily was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

"In March 2024, Emily had surgery to remove the cancer leaving her with a permanent colostomy.

"Henry received a routine scan in July only to receive the devastating news that his cancer had returned at stage 4 and this time (was) inoperable.

"Henry is currently receiving immunotherapy and his latest scans indicate the treatment is working!

"Emily and Henry share a large family of two girls and four boys. All the children have been incredible, all having their own struggles in different ways but have been resilient enough to focus on the positives.

"The team have been such an amazing support network for not just Sam but for the family.

"Helping Sam attend training and matches when it wasn’t possible for his parents to take him, parents and other team members lending an ear if needed and really channelling such positivity into him out of the goodness of their hearts."

The challenge will start in the early hours of Saturday March 29, all ran in a relay the same day, with each leg likely to take a few hours before reaching the team for the final leg.

The Bay Limestone Round peaks include Warton Crag, Arnside Knott, Hutton Roof Crags, Humphrey Head and others.
