Tyson Fury-Oleksandr Usyk rematch date announced

Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury will meet again on December 21

Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will meet in a rematch for the heavyweight championship of the world on December 21.

The rematch was agreed in a contract by the two men prior to their first fight on May 18, won by Usyk, and the date was announced on Wednesday.

The second fight between Fury, from Morecambe, and the Ukrainian will again happen in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the General Authority of Entertainment in Saudi Arabia, tweeted: "The rematch between the Undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk and the Champion Tyson Fury is now scheduled on the 21st of December during Riyadh Season.

"The world will watch another historical fight again.

"Our commitment to boxing fans continues. Hope you enjoy it."

Usyk defeated Fury by close split decision in their dramatic first fight, handing 'The Gypsy King' the first loss of his professional career in 36 fights.

The Ukrainian won by scores of 115-112 and 114-113 in his favour, with the other judge scoring 114-113 for the Morecambe man.

A ninth round 'knockdown' when the Ukrainian rallied and badly hurt The Gypsy King, sending him stumbling into the corner and forcing a count from the referee, proved decisive.

Earlier in the contest, Tyson, 35, had boxed brilliantly, and was well in front after six rounds.

But Usyk, who seemed hurt himself in the sixth round from the bigger man's uppercuts and body shots, showed the heart of a champion to come back in the second half.

The 37-year-old held the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO and Ring Magazine titles going into the fight. With victory, the former Olympic champion also took Tyson's WBC and lineal titles, becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion since 2000.

It is not clear yet whether the rematch will be for all the belts. Usyk's team are lobbying the IBF (International Boxing Federation) hoping to avoid being stripped of the organisation's belt, as Filip Hrgovic is their mandatory challenger in line for the next title shot.
