A Lancaster boxer has struck gold at a first ever national university and college championships.
Naz Brown from Lancaster University Boxing came away with a gold medal at the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Boxing Championships held in Portsmouth over last weekend.
The university team was Brown (54kg), Dahunsi Odowule (67kg), Iestyn Facey (67kg), and Callum Levitt (71kg).
Iestyn Facey set the tone with a masterclass of skill and power, dominating his taller opponent from York University to secure a unanimous points victory.
Naz brought finesse and composure in his 54kg bout against Liverpool University. Facing a relentless, forward-charging opponent, Naz boxed brilliantly off the back foot, setting traps and landing clean shots.
Callum Levitt showed grit and resilience against an experienced Midlands boxer. In a tight, technical contest, Callum impressed with his defence and sharp counters, but narrowly missed out on the decision.
Iestyn Facey returned for his second bout, landing clean shots and displaying exceptional skill. Unfortunately, an accidental clash of heads led to a two-point deduction, tipping the bout in his opponent’s favour.
The 54kg final saw Naz Brown face yet another Liverpool opponent, this time giving away both height and reach. But Naz was unstoppable, switching seamlessly between back-foot boxing and aggressive combinations. He out-thought, out-skilled, and out-manoeuvred his rival to secure a historic gold medal for Lancaster University—their first ever at BUCS Boxing.
Lancaster University Boxing thanked the boxers, the LU Boxing Society, and the Student Union for making it possible
The team was spearheaded by Samuel Wisniewski, head coach of Lancaster Boxing Club, alongside Lancaster University Boxing Society President Callum Levitt and Vice President Aleks Strychala.
