Morecambe secure vital win over AFC Wimbledon in battle to beat drop

Morecambe moved to within one point of League Two safety after a fine 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium.

Lee Angol netted the only goal 20 minutes into the contest as the Shrimps secured all three points against their promotion chasing rivals.

Morecambe made four changes to the starting line up to the side that lost to Gillingham on Saturday, and started the game strongly – a Luke Hendrie cross was put wide by Paul Lewis.

A Josh Neufville cross for the visitors was headed wide by Alistair Smith, before Neufville’s low effort from the edge of the box was tipped around the post by Harry Burgoyne.

Morecambe then took the lead. In the second phase of a free kick, the ball was worked back to Adam Lewis, whose deep cross was headed across the face of goal by Yann Songo'o, where Lee Angol smashed home from close range.

After the break, an early second half chance for the visitors saw a Neufville strike again repelled by Burgoyne, before an overhead effort from James Furlong failed to hit the target.

At the other end, Gwion Edwards had a good chance to seal the points, but his effort sailed over the bar, while substitute Andy Dallas saw a left footer curl just wide.

Marcus Browne did have the ball in the back of the net on 87 minutes the referee pulled the ball back for a foul.

Despite late pressure from the away side, including three corners in added time, the Shrimps stood firm and moved to within a point of climbing out of the bottom two, ahead a trip to MK Dons on Saturday.
