Morecambe FC will receive compensation for midfielder JJ McKiernan, after his departure from the Shrimps was confirmed.

The 22-year-old midfielder has signed a four-year-deal with League One side, Lincoln City, bringing speculation as to his future to an end.

McKiernan was offered the chance to stay at the club and activate an option of extending his contract for a second year, but the player and club failed to agree terms on the deal.

The Northern Ireland U21 international made 33 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring 7 goals, including a notable hat-trick at Colchester United.

His campaign was curtailed by an ankle injury sustained on New Year’s Day, but returned to the first team squad in the closing weeks of the season.

A statement from Morecambe Football Club said: ‘’Despite making a number of offers to JJ during and after the season’s conclusion, the player turned down what we had to offer.

‘’Prior to JJ’s move to Lincoln City, both clubs were unable to agree a compensation package for the player.

‘’This matter has now been referred to The Professional Football Compensation Committee.’’

The PFCC determines the amount of compensation a football club should receive when a player contracted to that club is expected to join another English club.

It consists of an independent Chairman and members appointed by the Premier League and The Football League (as applicable), the Professional Footballers' Association and the League Managers' Association.

This committee determines the amount of compensation payable for training and developing players under the age of 24.
