Morecambe slip closer to League Two relegation after Carlisle defeat

Morecambe slipped closer to relegation from League Two after a 2-0 defeat to fellow strugglers Carlisle at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium.

The result leaves the Shrimps bottom of the League Two table, seven points from safety with four games, and a maximum 12 points to play for, remaining.

Other than a Lee Angol effort wide of the mark, the first half started with little in the way of opportunities for either side, until the 24^th minute, when Kadeem Harris found space down the left before crossing toward Matt Dennis at the back post, who fired wide.

Four minutes later, the visitors took the lead. A deep cross from the right by Jack Ellis was headed home by a completely unmarked Georgie Kelly from six yards.

Morecambe should have equalised with the last kick before half time, as Tom White did well on the edge of the area, and his cross found Hallam Hope at the back post, who scuffed a close range effort wide.

In the second half, Yann Songo'o then came agonisingly close to an equaliser after latching onto Max Taylor's knock down following an Adam Lewis corner, but the shot went over the bar on the turn.

United doubled their advantage on the hour mark. Morecambe didn’t clear a corner properly, and Jack Ellis lifted a ball back into the box, where defender Terrell Thomas brought the ball down and slotted past Harry Burgoyne from six yards.

Tom White and Marcu Dackers both saw volleys deflected behind, while Callum Jones forced Gabe Breeze into his only meaningful action of the game on 85 minutes with a fierce drive from distance.

The Shrimps travel to Bromley on Good Friday.
