Morecambe went down to a 1-0 defeat on the opening day of the League 2 season at Walsall.
Taylor Allen's first-half strike from distance proved to be the only goal of the game on Saturday.
Gwion Edwards tested the Walsall defence at times and substitute Jordan Slew had a late chance but for the most part it was a frustrating afternoon for the Shrimps.
Returning after injury curtailed his season last time, Stuart Moore made crucial saves at the other end including a full-length dive to keep out Connor Barrett in the second-half.
The Shrimps will look to rebound quickly as they face Huddersfield Town in the EFL Cup this Tuesday followed by their first home league game of the season against Gillingham next Saturday.
