Two-time wheelchair world champion calls for more support for disability darts in Morecambe

Richard Green

A back-to-back world champion from Morecambe has called for more support for disability darts in the town.

Richard Green is a two-time wheelchair world darts champion, but says he may have to give up travelling to tournaments due to the cost.

He also said there is nowhere in Morecambe with a wheelchair-height dart board, wheelchair access and disabled toilet, for darts players with disabilities to play.

Richard, who had his right leg amputated 40 years ago, beat a field of competitors from all over the globe to take the World Disability Darts Association title in Frankfurt, Germany, in 2023.

He said, speaking to Beyond Radio at the time: "I'd never played wheelchair darts before. My legs are shot and although I can be on my feet to play for a few hours, this was three days of darts, all day every day. My left knee would have swollen up like a football."

Then, Richard won the International Disability Darts Federation wheelchair world title in November 2024, held in Mansfield.

"I'm so disappointed with the lack of support for disability darts in the area," he said.

"I want to try to get a venue for others to try disability darts.

"A venue that will put a wheelchair height board in, and has wheelchair access and disabled toilet, here in Morecambe, if possible.

"Disabled people want a platform to promote their love of sport.

"I use a wheelchair for disability darts as it is a long format over a long weekend.

"But it now looks like due to nowhere to play that format in Morecambe, and it now getting so expensive to do the disability events for long weekends with hotels, travel costs and food, it's now looking like I will have to stop doing these events - unless I can find a company to sponsor me and support disability darts.

"It would be great to arrange a venue that can put on once a month meetings for disabled players, standing and in wheelchairs, and could get the right venue disability organisations to be involved."
