Vale of Lune welcomes ex-England international and British Lion to charity dinner

A former England and British Lions player was guest of honour at the Vale of Lune's first charity dinner since before lockdown.

On Friday evening, the rugby club welcomed John Bentley who regaled the room with stories of his rugby career, from Cleckheaton Under 7s to the Lions tour of South Africa, with his polished charm, Yorkshire warmth and sublime storytelling ability. 

The proceeds of the event go to two rugby charities: 'My Name'5 Doddie' is in memory of the late Scotland forward Doddie Wair, who campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness and research funds to fight Motor Neurone's Disease. #

The second cause is 'SOS KitAid' which collects sports clothing and equipment, and distributes it to underprivileged youngsters overseas. Andy Thompson brought with him the 'Rubgy for All' trophy, recently awarded to 'SOS KitAid' at an event in Paris. 

Attendees came from the local business community, supporters and former Vale players as well as friends from neighbouring rugby clubs, including Kirkby Lonsdale, Fleetwood and Kendal.

The auction and prize draw raised over £2,000 for the charities.

The club wished to express gratitude to those who donated the auction lots and prizes, as well as those who bought them. Full marks also go to the Vale's highly motivated catering team who excelled on the night.
